Healthcare

Out of the 36 healthcare facilities surveyed, 35 have access to electricity from various sources, including the national grid.

A total of 36 healthcare facilities (HCFs) were surveyed across Marsabit County, comprising 15 from rural areas and 21 from urban centres. Level 2 health facilities accounted for 72.2% of the total, Level 3 for 19.4%, Level 4 for 5.6%, while the remaining were Level 5 referral hospitals.

On average, rural health facilities serve approximately 17 outpatients per day, while urban facilities record nearly double that number. Larger facilities, such as the Level 5 hospital, handle significantly higher outpatient volumes—up to 150 patients daily. For inpatient services (available in Level 3 and above), urban facilities average 9 inpatients per day, with figures rising to as many as 80 in Level 5 facilities. This data is critical in designing appropriate and reliable energy supply solutions for healthcare operations.

In terms of service delivery, 21 facilities operate on a 24-hour basis, while 24 provide maternity services, underscoring the importance of continuous and dependable energy supply. Nearly all facilities (97.2%) have access to some form of electricity, primarily from KPLC mini-grids and solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.
